Another intercom message blasted across the prison, a gruff voice booming, and most of the guards could be seen cringing at the sound of Warden Hazen. "Captain Brian Knauer! To my office...IMMEDIATELY!" The intercom clicked off with a loud snap, and the Warden paced back and forth in his office, his beloved cowboy hat scrunched up angrily in his balled up fist. "Goddamn Captain.." He muttered to himself.

<<wow...>>
Knauer had been in the aisle ways when his name had been shouted over the intercom. "Shit," he mumbled and headed towards the Warden's office. He ignored all of the strange glances he got as he rasped on the door of the office and entered. "You wanted me sir?" he asked, remembering the cringing of everyone. He was in for a bumpy ride...

The Warden angrily brushed passed him, looking outside quickly before slamming the door shut. Grabbing the Captain by the back of his neck, he steered him towards the lone chair, swinging it around, and shoved Knauer into it.
Growling with a menacing stare, the Warden picked up a remote control, flicking on his security system tv. Rewinding a bit, he stopped to fast-forward to a special spot on the screen. Almost shaking with rage, he leaned on his desk, pointing to the screen, and the people on it.
"Explain this to me, Knauer, because so far, I haven't come up with a good reason to why exactly you are hugging, hugging, an inmate?". There, on the screen, in black and white, was the Captain and their newest woman inmate.

Knauer stared stupidly at the screen, going completely pale. He looked like a ghost actually... "Um... sir... I..." Okay, this was a situation he COULDN'T talk himself out of. He was screwed... his ass was fried... he didn't know what to do. He swallowed the lump in his throat but it wasn't working very well. He accidentally swallowed his gum, causing him to cough a bit to get it down all the way.
Lying always made it worse... aw shit, he was in big trouble. Shaking his head in doubt, he leaned back in the chair, rubbing his neck. Looking down, he spoke. "I can't explain that sir," he said quietly. The video cameras! How could he be so stupid?!

The Warden leaned back, slightly surprised. He thought that Knauer would at least come out with some lazy-ass excuse as to why he was in that cell with the young woman. Sighing heavily, some of his anger gone, Hazen's face was still pretty red from his previous shouting. Moving off his desk he walked around to look out his window. Crossing his arms, he peered out to survey the inmates - they seemed oblivious to all the action that was going on in here, he thought to himself.
Turning, he looked at Knauer, looking extremely guilty in the chair. Finally, the Warden sat down in his chair, lacing his fingers together. He had pulled out the inmate's file, previously, and it was still lying on his desk. Peering down, he looked at her age.
"It's a lost dream, Knauer. She's twenty, and still has about 3 years left in here. You can't have her." The Warden was silent, mulling this issue over in his mind. "What where you thinkin, Captain? You know you can't pull this kind of bull-shit around here...it's wrong."

The Captain looked away, pained. This whole ordeal brought back old memories from the past. He winced at the thoughts of Michelle. Shaking his head, he looked at the Warden, his pain expression hidden behind his face of anger. "Sir, I don't care what this is! Michelle made me promise I would find someone to love and by god, I did!" his voice rose everytime he spoke until it was loud.
He stood up, knocking his chair over in the process. Anger racked his body as he attempted to control it. "If you don't like it then kiss my ass!" he was flared up now and the Warden's mood wasn't making it any better.

Hazen jerked back in his seat at the mention of Michelle. He hadn't heard Knauer mention her in, well, forever. Most of the guards didn't recognize the name, most of them hadn't been here that long to remember her, and those who did remember the incident kept it to themselves out of respect for the Captain.
He hadn't meant to push Knauer this far, but it was his job. The Warden listened to the Captain yell loudly about being in love, and he started to get a major headache. The prison had never had this sort of trouble, between a guard and an inmate. Goddamn these women. Hazen thought angrily. None of this would have even come about had he not accepted their forms.
Sighing loudly,he cracked a few of his knuckles out of habit. "What do you expect me to say, Knauer? She's an inmate. An INMATE. The Warden stood up, moving to his mini-fridge to take out a bottle of water.

"So? Knauer's tone had quieted down quite a bit as he picked up the chair and sat back down in it. He rubbed his face to try to calm himself down. Michelle... the pained memories caused him to cringe. He couldn't believe after all of this time he had the courage to speak her name... especially because it was his fault that she was gone. This hurt him the most.
"So what... just because she's an inmate doesn't mean she doesn't deserve a second chance. Hell knows how many chances I've recieved..." he muttered, putting his feet up on the Warden's desk, not really caring that they were up there.

The Warden shrugged, offering Knauer a bottle of water. God, it was hot out. He took a sip, letting it wash down his throat languishly. He pondered the Captain's words for a second, he himself thinking of Michelle and that whole messy situation. He knew that Knauer would never fully get over her, they had been in love, he had heard, and Michelle had been one of his best female guards...
Hazen leaned back in his chair, then shook his head, not wanting to compromise this situation, "So Knauer, you're saying that it's ok for you to have a relationship with an inmate? What about your job, isn't that important to you? Are you just gonna sit around for three years waiting to marry this girl? There's a ten year age difference to think about!" All of these questions came tumbling out of his mouth, he wanted answers, fast.

Knauer looked up at the Warden in a sense of shock. He had been so in love with Kaylen, he had totally forgotten about the fact that the two of them were ten years apart. He refused the bottle of water in fear that the Warden had spiked it when he wasn't looking. His job... a frickin' hell, that's what his job was.
"Sir, my job... my job is a high priority... If I have to wait for three years, that's what I'm going to do," he answered, shaking his head bitterly. He pondered over what he had just said and realized what he was saying... Shaking his head, he sighed and leaned back in the chair.

The Warden sighed heavily. Getting out from behind his desk he walked over, and despite himself put a large hand on Knauer's shoulder. "Listen to yourself, son, you're obviously not thinking clearly! I cannot just let this relationship go, because pretty soon all of the guards will see your example that you're setting and run loose - what do you expect me to do?"
Hazen gripped his shoulder, tightly, trying to make him see some sense. "Let the young girl serve her sentence, but don't touch her, got it? I don't want this situation to get out...it's not a pretty one for me to deal with, and you neither."

Knauer gave a slight look of pain as the Warden gripped his shoulder. He bit back the bitter tears that came to his eyes. Not be with Kaylen. He shook his head in more pain before going completely numb. He couldn't do that... it just wasn't possible. "Sir... I can't do that... I can't let go of her..." he choked out, narrowing his eyebrows.
"I never will... And you know that..." he said, trying to get the Warden's hand off of his shoulder. He didn't know if it was tight or if he was just feeling a lot of pressure over his whole entire body. He didn't know what else to do... he felt hopeless... defenseless... powerless... dead...

Hazen jerked his hand off of Knauer's back, and started pacing again, something that he had started to do more frequently. Popping an advil into his mouth, he knew that this had to be solved one way or another. Either Knauer would have to 1) quit his job, and wait three years for Kaylen to be considered for parole or 2) the Warden would step aside, and let their romance go.
He tapped his cowboy boot against the hard floor, and decided then and there, exactly what he was gonna let happen. "Ok, Knauer. You're a good Captain, a mighty good Captain, and I don't wanna see you leave Allenville under these...unfortunate...circumstances. I will let you stay here, and continue to work and I suppose see Kaylen, but you have to agree to some conditions, otherwise, I'm going to have to let you go, and you know that."
He took a deep breath, then continued, "There will be absolutely no sleeping in her cell on your part, or vice-versa. This is a prison, not a hotel room, got it? Secondly, you will not be able to just let her out randomly, to follow you everywhere. You still have your job, and you need to do it, ok, son? Lastly, I don't want this leaking out to any other guards or inmates. It's between the three of us, got it?" He waited, to see if these were acceptable terms.

Knauer's eyes widened as he sat there, stunned. He had half a mind to fall to his knees in front of the Warden and kiss his boots. "Yes sir, those terms are very acceptable," he said instantly, pleased that he would be able to keep his damned job and still see the woman that he loved. He swallowed the lump in this throat.
He stood up and assumed his proud Captain position in front of the Warden. He felt he now had a reason to do his duty, to take care of this place like he was supposed to. He repositioned his cowboy hat and straightened out his uniform to make himself look neat. "Thank you sir," he said, bowing his head. His eyes shimmered slightly but not radiant enough to make everyone notice.

Hazen nodded gruffly, putting his hands to rest on his waist. It was only morning, and yet he felt like he had just been through a whole day of arguing. Ah well, compromise needed to happen sometimes, especially when jobs were at stake. Without the Captain here, this place would crumble, and the Warden knew that. With relief, he walked over to the door, opening it a crack to let the warm sun shine wade in.
"Okay then, Knauer. You're welcome." He said with his usual voice of gruffness. "Now, I don't expect those prisoners to escort themselves to dining hall....what are you waiting for?" He said with a small twinkle in his eye, one rarely seen.
